Running can be a daunting prospect for anyone especially those who have not partaken in this type of exercise before. We have created a brief guide to aid those wanting to start running but are unsure or anxious about the process.
Set Manageable Goals
This may be obvious in other aspects of life but in running it can be crucial for continued participation and motivation. Set goals and targets that are reachable and achievable, these can be adjusted and developed as you continue through your running experience. This may be being able to run a 10K by X or completing the ‘Couch to 5K programme’, everyone’s targets and goals will be different so never compare yourself to someone else and just keep on running!
PLAN, PLAN, PLAN
Planning can be pivotal to success especially when starting out. This planning can be varied however the basis of it should be based around the days you aim to run and the distance (following a programme such as ‘Couch to 5k’ can be helpful). This method offers accountability and allows you to prepare correctly prior to setting off.
Run With A Friend\Partner
Running with someone else can be beneficial for both running performance but also social and mental health as it can be seen as an opportunity to meet with friends whilst exercising. More so, it can be used as a competitive edge to push all parties involved to do better and continue their running journey.
Change Of Routine
Doing the same thing over and over again not only becomes predictable but can also create boredom and running is no different. To avoid this feeling and the potential loss of motivation, changing up your runs can be very beneficial. This may be varying the distance, the route or even the terrain; these are just some ideas to keep you motivated and moving forwards.
Correct Preparation
From warming up to wearing the correct trainers can all impact performance at all levels of participation. It is crucial a thorough warm up is conducted to avoid injuries and allow your body to be prepared for exercise. As well as this, footwear and the correct ones at that is often overlooked especially by beginners however a correctly fitting pair for an individual’s running style can benefit them massively both in performance and comfort.
